• Mom’s Way

I was just in the kitchen putting baked bean together and it occurred to me how much of my Mom’s way of doing things I’ve brought to my own adulthood. Like, for instance, baked beans. Mother was always horrified at the idea of dumping a can of baked beans into a pot and warming it up right from the can. Instead, she drained the beans, put them in a casserole dish, added barbecue sauce, mustard, a chopped onion, and brown sugar. Then she placed two strips of bacon across the top in an X and put them in the oven. She baked them until they were dry enough that when…

  • A Mom Thing

I just spoke to my friend Martha, and we are celebrating. Last week, her daughter  received distressing news when she had an ultrasound of her first baby. We’ve been praying and sending the pregnancy out into the Universe, asking for God’s gracious grace. Today, they received the news that Martha’s little grandbaby in the womb is healthy and perfect. The relief in my dear friend’s voice was audible, and the situation made me think of how parenting is a “forever” job and how Martha’s daughter is having her first taste of that before her baby is even born. We never ever stop being parents—once you have a child, you’re signed…

  • On Being a Writer

I am writer. My friend, Lani Diane Rich says I should say “I am a great writer!” So I will say it, “I am a great writer!” I’m anxiously waiting for my agent to call me and tell me that an editor agrees with us. That kind of validation would be truly wondrous. But being a writer makes me hyper-aware of everything I write, from blog posts to queries for my authors as I edit,  from chats with my kids to comments on  Facebook, from emails to a damn grocery list. Seriously! I’ve been known to toss a grocery list that felt disorganized or untidy and begin again. Am I…

  • The Lake House

I know, I know…there’s a movie by the same name, and although this has nothing to do with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, it does have to do with time. In The Lake House, time is a secondary character, playing against the two main characters as they try to figure out a way to meet at the Lake House. Time has been a secondary character in our effort to fulfill a dream. For almost 40 years, Husband and I have talked, dreamed, planned, fantasized about having a lake house. Each time we considered it, something got in the way, finances mostly. Seemed as if each time we thought we were…

  • I Love Doing Movie Lines…

…we do it all the time here. Husband, Son, DIL, and I constantly quote favorite lines from movies to one another. We’ve been known to have entire conversations using someone else’s words. And it doesn’t matter if the lines come from different movies—we can make it happen and the results are always pretty damn funny. So imagine my delight when I checked out author Jenny Cruisie’s website today www.arghink.com and found that her June 19 post was about “Useful Quotes.” The comments have been pouring in with tons of great quotes, including lots and lots of movie lines. It got me thinking about how much movies and TV affect my…

  • Skype…

…is a wonderful thing! Of all the terrific things about the Interwebs, Skype is my absolute favorite! You see, my kid lives 2,000 miles away and my heart aches daily from missing him. I last about three months before I get a raging case of “poor mommy” and have to see and hug him. I last even less time between phone calls–two days max and I’m hyperventilating, wondering if he’s okay. So, Skype is my cyber new best friend. We connect up and I get to see that sweet little bearded face, while all the news from his neck of the woods comes with visuals and vice versa. So today…

  • You CAN Fight City Hall…

…and sometimes win. Eleven years ago, We began a battle with a bureaucracy here in our community. At the time, the worst battle I’d ever fought was with my mother over marrying Husband. So I had no clue how to fight—no armor, no skills, no information. I only knew that our home was in danger and we’d worked hard to make this home what we wanted it to be. I wasn’t about to see it ruined for what I believed was no good reason. The general gist is we live on a small two-lane U.S. highway and the state department of transportation (DOT) had decided they needed to expand it…

  • It’s Sunday…

…and my back yard is just gorgeous today. Everything is lush and green.  Purple clematis climbs over the arbor by the gardens, vibrant red lilies peek around the pampas grass, which is already taller than me.  Basil and rosemary and lavender fill the air with their pungent scents. Husband just finished the mowing and the trimming, I’ve weeded the gardens, and now we’re sitting on the patio under the umbrella watching a rabbit nibbling in the grass and feeling quite satisfied with ourselves. Later, the neighbors will walk over for our weekly glass of wine and catch-up session. We’ll light the wine-bottle oil lamps, put out chips and salsa, chocolate, …

  • Food and Me

I’ve had a cantankerous relationship with food my whole life.  Since I became an adult,  I’ve been some level of overweight from really overweight to “you need to lose a few pounds.” And for most of those years, I hated my body. It was fat. Not the American ideal, but curvy and round—not one bit skinny.  For ages, all I wanted was to be THIN. Oh, I’d say, “I just want to be healthy,” but it was a lie. I wanted to be THIN. And I tried every way there was to get THIN–diets, exercise, fasts, laxatives, fiber, you name it…outside of radical chemistry or surgery, I was there. Sometimes…
